A Blog is a website that is usually maintained by the individual who updates entries based on description of events, comments, perhaps event videos, pictures etc. Some blogs are functioned like an online personal journal, others are on a particular subject. Readers are able to leave comments or opinions.
One teacher commented on how much her middle and high school students like the who blogging experience. Each student based their blog topic on this quote by Gandhi, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world”. Students chose topics such as recycling, Darfur, donating blood, AIDs, pollution, animal abuse, genocide, teen stress, depression … Then she had them write two paragraphs on why that particular subject was posted. After that they did another post on specific ways that people can do to support their topics or change the world.
This particular teacher shared a few hints, one was to let the students play around on their blogs by allowing them to get to personalize it by adding a background, color, pictures, etc. She said that this will get the students more involved. Everyday a each student was to read a different students blog and comment on it.
One reply to the teacher was that the whole notion of letting the students build a blog around a theme was an interesting idea. I agree I think that students write away have a way to become critical thinkers and also an introduction to the blogging world.
