Journal 7: Blogging

A Blog is a website that is usually maintained by the individual who updates entries based on description of events, comments, perhaps event videos, pictures etc. Some blogs are functioned like an online personal journal, others are on a particular subject. Readers are able to leave comments or opinions.

One teacher commented on how much her middle and high school students like the who blogging experience. Each student based their blog topic on this quote by Gandhi, “We must be the change we wish to see in the world”. Students chose topics such as recycling, Darfur, donating blood, AIDs, pollution, animal abuse, genocide, teen stress, depression … Then she had them write two paragraphs on why that particular subject was posted. After that they did another post on specific ways that people can do to support their topics or change the world.

This particular teacher shared a few hints, one was to let the students play around on their blogs by allowing them to get to personalize it by adding a background, color, pictures, etc. She said that this will get the students more involved. Everyday a each student was to read a different students blog and comment on it.
One reply to the teacher was that the whole notion of letting the students build a blog around a theme was an interesting idea. I agree I think that students write away have a way to become critical thinkers and also an introduction to the blogging world.

Curtis, Diane (2002, November, 11). A "Fantastic Super" Use of Technology: Closing the Digital Divide. Edutopia, Retrieved October 10th, 2008, from http://www.edutopia.org/fantastic-super-use-technology

Mary Scroggs Elementary School is a school that is using technology as the main source of educating it's students. The school is known to be "honing" the students in their reading and writing skills. Mary Scroggs Elementary school is providing the students with the fundamentals of the importance of today's digital age. Each student is provided with a user name (which is their own student number) and a password to be able to access their schools educational computer network. The school received an educational grant from BellSouth because of a commitment to integrate technology into the curriculum and a determination to close the digital divide. Each classroom is supplied with wireless laptops, computers and software programs such as Inspiration, HyperStudio, 3D Space etc. Emails are being used much more often among the teachers, and staff along with teacher to parent. To make sure that no one lacks access to Scroggs' technological advantages, families with no home computers are loaned "Internet access devices" for their homes. Parents are becoming more involved in the education of their children because they have the access to do with most of the students progress now being on schools website. Teachers are not only getting the digital benefits, but they are also being able to plan lesson plans together and share ideas by getting together with other teachers of the same grade.

Why aren't more teachers using email or the internet in general as a form of communication with parents and students?

I really like the idea of the internet being another way to be able to communicate among teachers, students, and parents. It's just a shame that so many teacher are still not implementing the use of technology among their students. Perhaps one of the reasons is because the many homes don't have the means to obtain internet of even a computer. Nevertheless,I think it comes down to the school's funding because if a certain school had the funds it can very well provide the resources for those student whom did not have the access from home.

Should all elementary teachers be required to teach their students at least one lesson plan of computer usage?

I think that it is very important for young students to learn fundamental computer skills. In my opinion, computers are here to stay and we need to keep up with technology because it is a field that is always changing rapidly. I think that every student should have the privilege to be taught in public school computer basics. It is true that many young students may have computer knowledge from home, but not all students may have the luxury of having a computer at home. As a future teacher, I care for my student's futures and I believe that in public education, students should be able to get the fundamental tools to make them a better student.

Journal 6- Software Review

INSPIRATION 8

1. I was surprised at how user friendly the software, Inspiration 8 program was. I had no idea that Inspiration 8 was available to draw out ideas and it is a very easy way to read them. I'm sure that if I would have been introduced to this software earlier in my CSUSM coursework I would have been able to make my student life much easier and organized by using Inspiration.

2. Atomic Learning was really helpful for me, while I tried to map out the ISTE NETS on Inspiration. I know that if I had to I could figure out how to use the software on my own. But I figured if the help was there might as well use it.

3. As a future teacher I see myself using the Inspiration software. I could use it for drawing out stories that we read in the classroom, Math, Words (such as Vocabulary) etc. I believe that in the elementary school years students are very visual learners and I feel that by applying colors and pictures into an Inspiration map, I will be able to retain the students attention longer.

iMOVIE

1. Prior to this class I had never used iMovie and I didn't think I could ever do it. I thought that it would be too complicated because I had used Movie Maker and I imagined it was the along the same difficultness. However, I discovered that iMovie was so much fun and user friendly at the same time.

2. I didn’t use Atomic Learning , while creating my first iMovie. My reasons for not using it were because my professor introduced the tools that we would be using. I also took notes and went back to my notes as needed. I also had a few peers help me. If the situation was different for example if I would have done my first iMovie at home with nobody to help my around me, then I’m sure that Atomic Learning would have been my best friend.

3. I will use iMovie in my future classroom. I think that it’s a great way to present many different subjects. Also, I’m sure that if I were to do a lesson where I had the students be part of the iMovie they would definitely provide their undivided attention and be more willing to learn.
